2015 Fluvax** Has Arrived!

  • Book a 5 minute appointment for a Fluvax.
  • The out of pocket cost is only $10** (vaccine cost).

** Trivalent (standard) Fluvax. Quadrivalent will be more.

This year there are 2 versions of the Flu Vaccination:

1. The (Standard) Trivalent Influenza Vaccination

This contains the following 3 strains:

  • A (H1N1): an A/California/7/2009 (H1N1) - like virus.
  • A (H3N2): an A/Switzerland/9715293/2013 (H3N2) - like virus.
  • B: a B/Phuket/3073/2013 - like virus.

The Australian Government is supplying this version in it's funded program for the elderly.

2. The Quadrivalent Influenza Vaccination (not available yet)

This contains the following 4 strains:

  • A (H1N1): an A/California/7/2009 (H1N1) - like virus.
  • A (H3N2): an A/Switzerland/9715293/2013 (H3N2) - like virus.
  • B: a B/Phuket/3073/2013 - like virus.
  • B/Brisbane/60/2008-like virus

The quadrivalent vaccines include an additional B strain of influenza and have been produced in response to uncertainties over which B strain will predominate.

However, the consensus seems to be that the H3N2 strain (part of the standard trivalent vaccine) seemed likely to cause the greatest burden of influenza this season, particularly in the elderly.

The quadrivalent vaccines were likely to be more expensive than trivalent vaccines and would not be included in the government-sponsored program.

Quadrivalent vaccine will be available here at Citymedical. Cost is going to be an issue (unknown at this stage), and whether you get an incremental benefit because of coverage of the additional B strain is not known.

In the United States recent 2014/15 flu season, about half of all flu vaccines given were the quadrivalent vaccine.

The importance of annual vaccination

Influenza viruses evolve constantly and in order to provide continuous protection it is necessary to provide people with annual vaccinations that contain the most recent strains.

Health organisations recommend annual vaccines, because post-vaccination antibody titres tend to decline over the course of 12 months. For optimal protection against influenza an annual vaccine is essential, even when the strains haven’t changed since the last flu season.
